ABOUT SALOMON BENZIMRA

Author, Salomon BenzimraSalomon Benzimra has led a fascinating life. He was born in 1943 in the International Zone of Tangiers (now Morocco) which was a refuge for many cultures. His early education was in French schools, but his family was Spanish-speaking. In fact, his distant ancestors lived in Spain during the 1400’s and were among the many who crossed the Straits of Gilbralter to escape the Inquisition. In addition to French, Spanish and English, Salomon also reads Hebrew, and reads and speaks a bit of Arabic.

He studied chemical engineering in France and worked in Morocco and Montreal before moving to Toronto in 1976.  He became involved in Israeli and world affairs after 9/11 and began writing for publication.

Israel Truth Week Updates – March 01/13

There are a number of very exciting developments in the final days before the 2013 Israel Truth Week Conference:

120307 SUN TV, 'Israel Truth Week': Michael Coren-Mark Vandermaas-Stuart Laughton

“The resistance has begun!,” Michael Coren

1. Final-program is now available for download on conference page.

2. Watch SUN TV’s ‘The Arena’ w/Michael Coren next week: Cathy Lanyard, Executive Director of Friends of ALYN Hospital, who is flying up from NYC to be with us (we’re trying to raise $25K for her sick & disabled kids in Jerusalem), as is ITW allyRabbi Jonathan Hausman from Boston, will be recording segments next Monday. Possibly also… our new keynote finale speaker, Rev. Majed El Shafie.

3. If you can’t be with us at the conference…would you consider helping Cathy’s kids? Even a $5 donation helps, and it’s for a great cause: Alyn treats kids of all races and religions, and their annual operating budget is about the same as a medium-sized hospital in the USA…for ONE week. Click here for the special ALYN/Israel Truth Week donation page.

4. ITW keynote presenter Rev. Majed El Shafie spoke at the United Nations last Thursday at a conference organized by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA) before the group presented a draft convention to the UN to stop the incitement to terror. We are thrilled to have him as our finale speaker next Wednesday evening.

Tahir Aslam Gora, Muslim Committee Against Antisemitism5. NEW Day 1 speaker: Tahir Aslam Gora, Founder of Muslim Committee Against Antisemitism, will step in to replace Shobie Kapoor of the Canadian Patriotic Society who was, regretfully, called out of town for a family emergency. His topic: ‘A Muslim Case Against Anti-Semitism.’ Come and meet Tahir at the ITW Tradeshow in the large lobby of Victory International Church, our venue. We are honoured to have Tahir with us, and I think you will want to hear what he has to say when you read what he already has said about freedom, anti-Semitism and Islamic extremism:

Tahir will also be speaking March 10th at a special event organized by the Muslim Committee Against Antisemitism at Mississauga’s Promenade Art Gallery from 2-6pm, 943 B Lakeshore Road East between Dixie & Cawthra. The event’s theme is, ‘Why is it important for Muslims to recognize Israel’s right to exist in order to curb prevailing Anti-Semitism within the Muslim Diaspora?’ Complimentary treats & refreshments included. More info: 905.320.0906, canadianthinkersforum@gmail.com.

Ryerson Israeli Student Association6. NEW Day 2 speaker: Eitan Gilboord, President of Ryerson Israeli Student Association, Ryerson University. His topic: ‘Combatting Anti-Semitism At Ryerson University.’ Eitan’s organization has become the first student group to organize an event under the Israel Truth Week name; on March 14/13 Author Salomon Benzimra will present ‘The Jewish Peoples’ Rights To The Land of Israel’ on campus. More details on the Find An Event page. Welcome Eitan!

7. The Hamilton Jewish Federation promoted the ITW conference this week to their members. Many thanks!

8. The Toronto Zionist Council included an announcement re ITW on its front page thanks to a submission by Goldi Steiner, Chair of Canadians for Israel’s Legal Rights (CILR). Thank you Goldi and TZC.

9. The Canadian Jewish News also included an announcement about the ITW conference, again thanks to a submission by Goldi Steiner of CILR. (Goldi has been very busy supporting ITW!)

Precious Life movie cover10. Rev. Joe Campbell is hosting an ITW event at Royal View Church in London, ON (site of the inaugural 2012 ITW conference). The event will be a screening of the documentary, ‘Precious Life,’ a story about an Israeli doctor who saves the life of a Palestinian child whose mother supports suicide bombers. More details on the Find An Event page. Reverend Joe will be blowing the shofar for us at the open of each day of the conference.

11. A Hamilton church has tentatively agreed to host a screening of ‘Precious Life’ on March 18th. Still working out details. Watch the Find An Event page.

There are other things happening behind the scenes that cannot be announced, but be assured that excitement is building as news of Israel Truth Week and our message spreads across provincial and international borders.

Israel Truth Week updates – Feb 16/13

Shobie Kapoor STRUTT 500pxHere are the latest updates for the Israel Truth Week Conference in Hamilton, March 5-6…

1. SHOBIE KAPOOR TO SPEAK: Very pleased to advise you that Shobie Kapoor, the young lady who led the charge to try to keep Omar Khadr out of Canada, co-founder of the Canadian Patriotic Society, has agreed to speak at the Israel Truth Week conference on Day 1 during the afternoon session. Her topic will be, ‘An East Indian-Canadian’s Case For Israel.’ She is an amazing woman with a beautiful heart and a determination to act. We are lucky to have her with us.

A new agenda is available on the conference page.

2. MEETINGS WITH JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS: The Never Again Group (sponsors of the McMaster U keynote finale for Tammi-Rossman-Benjamin of U of California) and I have had meetings with various Jewish organizations to introduce ourselves; all have given us warm welcomes. I do not know, as of this moment, whether they will be helping us to publicize this year’s conference, but I suspect by 2014 one or more will be on board. This is a long term project to build relationships and unity, and so patience is required.

SHALOM TORONTO: Caledonia Warrior Organizes Israel Conference

‘Caledonia Warrior Organizes Israel Conference’

SHALOM TORONTO, Feb 14/13

Doris Strub Epstein

[PDF] ENGLISH   [PDF] HEBREW

130214 Shalom Toronto cover Caledonia Warrior (CLICK ON IMAGE TO DOWNLOAD COMPLETE PAPER)The Israel Truth Week conference, to be held in early March, is “born of Nazi occupied Holland and the Caledonia crisis,” says founder Mark Vandermaas, who was adopted at the age of six by a Dutch couple who had survived the Nazi occupation of Holland. He grew up hearing about the plight of Jews under the Nazis and forged a deep connection with the Holocaust. Later, as a member of the Canadian Forces, he served with a United Nations peacekeeping force in the Middle East. But it was his experience with the violence and break-down of law and order by “racially biased” police against the residents of Caledonia that galvanized him to action on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people.

The Caledonia crisis began in February 28, 2006, when a handful of protesters from the nearby Six Nations reserve, walked onto Douglas Creek Estates, (DCE) which was then a residential subdivision of Caledonia, under construction, and blocked workers from entering it.

Over the next four years until today, as the occupation continued, the rule of law was destroyed. Major roads were closed and lawlessness ran rampant. Those who lived adjacent to DCE, about 450 families, were openly terrorized while the OPP police stood by. “They destroyed houses on a construction site; they burned down a bridge, attacked a builder in the home he was building for his daughter and left him with brain damage, they tore up the road. The non natives were victimized,” Mark said. “People had to get passes to get to their houses.

I saw the rule of law collapsing. I saw racial policing. Innocent people being victimized while the police did little or nothing. People were terrified even to speak out.”

130214 Shalom Toronto cover Caledonia Warrior - HEBREW (CLICK ON IMAGE TO DOWNLOAD COMPLETE PAPER)Mark was then working in real estate, selling homes in Cayuga, Hagersville and Caledonia, communities which would be victimized by illegal occupations, extortion and intimidation. After his arrest on December 2006 – the first of five arrests – while attempting to raise a Canadian flag in Caledonia- Mark put aside his promising real estate career and award- winning online real estate college course and became a full time, volunteer, activist, with the goal of permanently ending the race-based policing in Ontario. A man with a massive frame and ernest blue eyes, he has massive, tireless resolve.

He is mentioned several times in the book Helpless: Caledonia’s Nightmare of Fear and Anarchy, and How the Law Failed All Of Us, by Christie Blatchford. She writes: “The town was for all practical purposes, abandoned by the State… The book is about the failure of government to govern and to protect all its citizens equally. …The Ontario Provincial Police stood by while occupiers broke the law, often violently, right under their noses.” she writes.

Why should Jews be concerned with Caledonia? “Caledonia is the front line in the struggle against the extreme left who use Palestinian militants as pawns for their own anti-capitalist agenda just as they use Six Nations extremists. None of us are safe if the lessons of Caledonia are not learned,” says Mark.

Before heading over to the Israel Consulate Gary McHale (photo right) – ‘The Caledonia Crusader’ (as dubbed by SUN TV’s David Menzies) – recorded a session for the Brian Lilley show yesterday w/Menzies to talk about the recent decision by the Supreme Court of Canada to affirm racial justice as the law of the land, thereby devaluing the lives of victims of crime – native and non-Native – when they and their communities are victimized by repeat native offenders.

After taping Gary and Christine McHale, along with Caledonia hero Merlyn Kinrade (all of Canadian Advocates for Charter Equality – CANACE); Mark Vandermaas (Israel Truth Week/Caledonia Victims Project); Al Gretzky & Mary Lou Ambrogio (International Free Press Society); and members of the Hamilton-based Never Again Group spent the rest of the day at the Israel Consulate on Bloor Street to support the Jewish Defence League’s call to rally against planned protests by anti-Semitic forces in connection with the so-called, ‘Global March to Jerusalem.’
