“The resistance has begun!,” Michael Coren

1. Final-program is now available for download on conference page.

2. Watch SUN TV’s ‘The Arena’ w/Michael Coren next week: Cathy Lanyard, Executive Director of Friends of ALYN Hospital, who is flying up from NYC to be with us (we’re trying to raise $25K for her sick & disabled kids in Jerusalem), as is ITW allyRabbi Jonathan Hausman from Boston, will be recording segments next Monday. Possibly also… our new keynote finale speaker, Rev. Majed El Shafie.

3. If you can’t be with us at the conference…would you consider helping Cathy’s kids? Even a $5 donation helps, and it’s for a great cause: Alyn treats kids of all races and religions, and their annual operating budget is about the same as a medium-sized hospital in the USA…for ONE week. Click here for the special ALYN/Israel Truth Week donation page.

4. ITW keynote presenter Rev. Majed El Shafie spoke at the United Nations last Thursday at a conference organized by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA) before the group presented a draft convention to the UN to stop the incitement to terror. We are thrilled to have him as our finale speaker next Wednesday evening.

Tahir Aslam Gora, Muslim Committee Against Antisemitism5. NEW Day 1 speaker: Tahir Aslam Gora, Founder of Muslim Committee Against Antisemitism, will step in to replace Shobie Kapoor of the Canadian Patriotic Society who was, regretfully, called out of town for a family emergency. His topic: ‘A Muslim Case Against Anti-Semitism.’ Come and meet Tahir at the ITW Tradeshow in the large lobby of Victory International Church, our venue. We are honoured to have Tahir with us, and I think you will want to hear what he has to say when you read what he already has said about freedom, anti-Semitism and Islamic extremism:

Tahir will also be speaking March 10th at a special event organized by the Muslim Committee Against Antisemitism at Mississauga’s Promenade Art Gallery from 2-6pm, 943 B Lakeshore Road East between Dixie & Cawthra. The event’s theme is, ‘Why is it important for Muslims to recognize Israel’s right to exist in order to curb prevailing Anti-Semitism within the Muslim Diaspora?’ Complimentary treats & refreshments included. More info: 905.320.0906, canadianthinkersforum@gmail.com.

Ryerson Israeli Student Association6. NEW Day 2 speaker: Eitan Gilboord, President of Ryerson Israeli Student Association, Ryerson University. His topic: ‘Combatting Anti-Semitism At Ryerson University.’ Eitan’s organization has become the first student group to organize an event under the Israel Truth Week name; on March 14/13 Author Salomon Benzimra will present ‘The Jewish Peoples’ Rights To The Land of Israel’ on campus. More details on the Find An Event page. Welcome Eitan!

7. The Hamilton Jewish Federation promoted the ITW conference this week to their members. Many thanks!

8. The Toronto Zionist Council included an announcement re ITW on its front page thanks to a submission by Goldi Steiner, Chair of Canadians for Israel’s Legal Rights (CILR). Thank you Goldi and TZC.

9. The Canadian Jewish News also included an announcement about the ITW conference, again thanks to a submission by Goldi Steiner of CILR. (Goldi has been very busy supporting ITW!)

Precious Life movie cover10. Rev. Joe Campbell is hosting an ITW event at Royal View Church in London, ON (site of the inaugural 2012 ITW conference). The event will be a screening of the documentary, ‘Precious Life,’ a story about an Israeli doctor who saves the life of a Palestinian child whose mother supports suicide bombers. More details on the Find An Event page. Reverend Joe will be blowing the shofar for us at the open of each day of the conference.

11. A Hamilton church has tentatively agreed to host a screening of ‘Precious Life’ on March 18th. Still working out details. Watch the Find An Event page.

There are other things happening behind the scenes that cannot be announced, but be assured that excitement is building as news of Israel Truth Week and our message spreads across provincial and international borders.

Israel Truth Week updates – Feb 16/13

Shobie Kapoor STRUTT 500pxHere are the latest updates for the Israel Truth Week Conference in Hamilton, March 5-6…

1. SHOBIE KAPOOR TO SPEAK: Very pleased to advise you that Shobie Kapoor, the young lady who led the charge to try to keep Omar Khadr out of Canada, co-founder of the Canadian Patriotic Society, has agreed to speak at the Israel Truth Week conference on Day 1 during the afternoon session. Her topic will be, ‘An East Indian-Canadian’s Case For Israel.’ She is an amazing woman with a beautiful heart and a determination to act. We are lucky to have her with us.

A new agenda is available on the conference page.

2. MEETINGS WITH JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS: The Never Again Group (sponsors of the McMaster U keynote finale for Tammi-Rossman-Benjamin of U of California) and I have had meetings with various Jewish organizations to introduce ourselves; all have given us warm welcomes. I do not know, as of this moment, whether they will be helping us to publicize this year’s conference, but I suspect by 2014 one or more will be on board. This is a long term project to build relationships and unity, and so patience is required.

About Merlyn Kinrade

It is impossible to overstate how much Merlyn meant to those of us who have struggled against racial policing in Caledonia during the last 6 years. He was our rock, our advocate, our liaison and our friend as he doggedly pursued those responsible for the crimes against his community. You can read Merlyn’s bio, a list of his accomplishments and media articles about him here:

Merlyn Kinrade in pictures and video…

CANACE co-founder Jeff Parkinson prepared a video tribute to Merlyn that captures his dynamic, meet-life-head-on, personality we were privileged to share during the past 5+ years:

Merlyn’s final months: passionate and determined to the end…

Merlyn’s commitment to his community, his country and to Israel was unwavering even as he began to count down his final months:

Proud to be a member of the ‘Caledonia 8′…

On Dec 03/11 he proudly lined up to be arrested for ‘trespassing” on a county road as one of the ‘Caledonia 8′ who went to jail to dramatize, yet again, the continuing ignominy of racialized policing in Caledonia:

(All charges against the Caledonia 8 were later dropped.)

CLICK TO ENLARGE On Feb 18/12, as we walked for the first time, uninvited, on the occupied Douglas Creek Estates photographer David Strutt was there and captured the essence of Merlyn in the portrait to the right. Christie Blatchford (author of Helpless: Caledonia’s Nightmare of Fear And Anarchy, And How the Law Failed All Of Us) reported his arrest in the National Post:

Standing with Israel and the Jewish people…

On March 30/12 Merlyn and other CANACE founders travelled to the Israel Consulate in Toronto to stand with our Jewish friends against those who would destroy Israel. Our friends from the Jewish Defence League gave him an Israeli flag and later notified him that they had purchased a tree for him in Israel. He was so touched by these gestures as were we all.

Israel loses a daughter and defender – Rose Lax of Hamilton’s Never Again Group

sadUPDATED — I am very sad to to report that Rose Lax, a passionate advocate for Israel who was the driving force behind Hamilton’s Never Again Group, passed away on the weekend. She will be interned in Jerusalem on May 01/12 at 1:30pm at Bait Hesped, Har HaMenuchot Cemetary. A Shloshim Memorial service will take place at the Adas Israel Congregation in Hamilton on Wednesday, May 30/12 at 7:30pm.

The announcement from Adas Israel describes Rose as…

Beloved mother of Daisy, mother-in-law of Kent, grandmother of Olivia, Asher & Ben. Passionate defender of the Jewish People & Israel.”

I met Rose and many of her Never Again Group allies – Jewish and non-Jewish – on April 11/11 at a memorial service for the Fogel family who were massacred by Palestinian terrorists in their home. Afterwards, they insisted on knowing more about the Caledonia situation and understanding why Jews should be involved. Members of the Never Again Group later came to stand with us there, and they travelled to London for my 2011 Blue Beret vigil, and for the Israel Truth Week Conference that Rose helped make possible; it was Rose who stepped up to cover the costs of the room expenses which I would have been quite unable to pay without her help.

NAG logo red lgI was honoured to have been invited to speak – with Rose in the audience – at the Never Again Group’s first public event organized to counter Israel Apartheid Week  held at McMaster University on March 20/12. Rabbi Jonathan Hausman, who recently flew up from Boston to ride the bus with us to the National Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony was also a speaker that night along with Dr. Peter Marshall of the Victory International Church. The rabbi shared these thoughts with us about Rose’s passing:

My Friends,

Rose LaxThe traditional Jewish response upon receiving the news of the death of someone is “Baruch Dayan Emet-Blessed is the Righteous Judge.” It is far beyond our limited capacity to understand the unfolding of the universe when confronted by such a loss. This phrase reminds us that there events beyond our control, that are incomprehensible, and that we mourn with all of those amongst the Jewish people who have suffered loss.

Rose’s strength, tenacity, perspicacity are legendary. She knew purpose and incorporated such in her approach to life, and her uncompromising support for the State of Israel. She was truly a sentinel along the watchtower as described in Ezekiel 33:7-11.

If her life has taught us any lesson, it is this…do not shrink in the face of danger, do not withdraw in the heat of battle, do not compromise when such compromise will imperil Jewish security, understand the centrality of G-d working in our lives and never, ever let the light of freedom, liberty and democracy be extinguished.

Zichonah livracha, may her memory always serve us an abiding blessing leading us to lives of sanctity and consecration.

- TEXT -

Mr. Speaker, the nations of Canada and Israel, and, indeed, the Jewish community in Hamilton and around the world, lost a remarkable friend at the end of April with the sudden passing of Rose Lax.

Remarkable because she was born in a displaced persons camp to survivors of the Holocaust and yet grew to become an individual lauded for having changed the Jewish political landscape of North America.

Remarkable because of her tireless work to empower university students against the scourge of anti-Semitism on campuses.

Remarkable because Israeli member of the Knesset, Bennie Begin, son of the sixth Israeli prime minister, spoke of the very special connection he felt with Rose and the Lax family since the time of his parents.

We lost a woman of outstanding character and heart in Rose Lax. I, along with my colleagues, the Hon. Stockwell Day and the member for Nepean—Carleton, offer our sincere condolences to Rose’s family.

 We will miss you, Rose.

Israel Truth Week friends travel to National Holocaust Remembrance ceremony in Ottawa

120423 Prime Minister Harper w/'Righteous Among Nations' recipients, National Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

On April 23/12 Israel Truth Week founder Mark Vandermaas led a bus trip to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa for the National Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony with people from the London, Hamilton, Caledonia and Niagara regions. There, he was honoured to be part of the candle lighting ceremony recognizing the ‘Zachor Coalition’ — the group of organizations which makes the event possible.

The bus was provided by the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem, organizer of the event intended to honour survivors, victims and Gentile rescuers of Jews during the Second World War.

Prime Minister Harper was the first to speak, and his speech was very well received:

  • New English Review/Israpundit.com, Jerry Gordon, April 24/12: Canadian PM Harper’s National Holocaust Remembrance Day Speech in Ottawa Versus President Obama’s in Washington [LINK, LINK, PDF] (mentions his friend Rabbi Hausman who flew up from Boston to ride the bus with us as well as Mark Vandermaas & Israel Truth Week.)
  • London Free Press, April 23/12: Politicians mark Holocaust remembrance [PDF]

After the Prime Minister’s speech the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem bestowed the great honour – on behalf of the Israeli government – of the title ‘Righteous Among the Nations’  on the families of Klaas & Jetske Dreijer who saved Jews in Holland, and Karolina Juszczykowska, a single mother in Poland who was shot by the Nazis for hiding two Jews. You can read their courageous stories in the Society’s news release:

Other dignitaries spoke and helped light candles. Elizabeth May of the Green Party was called to speak and light the candle for the Zachor Coalition (photo R, Ms. May is not visible). Mark Vandermaas was called to the stage as a representative of two churches — Royal View Church in London, and Victory International Church in Hamilton –  who had made it possible for him to bring 46 people  to the event from the London, Hamilton, Caledonia and Niagara regions.

It was Royal View that made their facilities available for the Israel Truth Week Conference where the trip was first announced, and it was Victory International Church leader Dr. Peter Marshall who helped fill the bus by enthusiastically encouraging his congregation to participate. The bus was provided by the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem.

Those making the trip included three speakers (in addition to Mark Vandermaas) from the Israel Truth Week Conference:

  • Rabbi Jonathan Hausman, BA, MA, JD, the conference’s evening keynote, who travelled from Boston just to ride the bus with us — at his own expense. On the way back he explained in detail the meaning of the Kadish prayer for the dead sung by the Cantor during the ceremony. He was one of a handful of Jews who made the trip, and he was very moved by the willingness of so many non-Jews to endure the long trip to pay their respects to the 6,000,000 of his people murdered by the Nazis. The rabbi holds a Masters degree specializing in Middle East Studies, so he answered questions from passengers for over an hour in a rolling ‘townhall’ meeting. He fondly joked afterwards, ‘When I speak to Jews they pay me, when I speak to you, I pay to come!”
  • Al Gretzky, Director of Communications for the International Free Press Society
  • Caledonia activist Gary McHale, our afternoon keynote, and his wife Christine. Gary’s speech was a crowd pleaser, especially for the Christians and Jews in the audience.

Other notables included:

  • Caledonia activist Merlyn Kinrade, Canadian Advocates for Charter Equality who brought his 9-year-old daughter Olivia. Meryln purchased Israel-Canada friendship flag lapel pins for everyone on the bus, and Olivia took great joy in handing them out. At the ceremony Olivia laid a yellow rose below the menora with the other children. She also had her picture taken with Prime Minister Harper and obtained his signature along with those of the German, U.S. and Slovakian ambassadors in her book about Anne Frank. Most importantly, though, she spoke with several Holocaust survivors who also signed as well. Many agreed that the trip would not have been the same without her.
  • Doug Joyner, Mayor of West Lincoln w/daughter (invited by Cdn. Society of Yad Vashem)
  • Members and leaders of other churches and organizations from the London, Woodstock and Caledonia areas.

It was a very long day, especially for those who boarded in London at 7:00am and didn’t return home until 2:00am the following day, but nearly everyone enthusiastically raised their hands when asked who wanted to make the trip next year. Here are some comments received:

From a Christian passenger…

“Dear Mark and Debbie, I wanted to take this moment to personally thank you both for the hours that you dedicated to the Israel Truth Week but what is on my heart right now is the events of our trip to Ottawa. The experience will forever last in my heart and has given us a further tie and bond to our beloved Jewish bothers and sisters. Just the coordination alone of these events would take more hours than most people would ever take the time to even consider. Please know that I do appreciate the endless hours that both of you give as a team. Mark when you have time to reflect I hope that you will see how much God was in control of our whole day on Monday. His timing is perfect and so was ours and so was the day. I hope that down the road when your ready that I also could help you out with some project ie research, paper work, protest.  Blessings and hugs, XXXXX”

From the wife of a pastor…

“Mark, I just wanted to say thanks for all the work you did putting together that trip. It was well worth going on. XXXXX”

From a Jewish passenger…

“I just wanted to thank you all for yesterday’s experience. I had never been to a memorial event like the one in Ottawa and to say that I was overwhelmed by the intensity of it all would be an understatement. So many wonderful people; so many wonderful lessons.

“Gary and Christine [McHale], listening to the stories of Caledonia and beyond are always fascinating to me and I sincerely hope that you will soon be rewarded for all that you have struggled for. Merlyn, your daughter Olivia is simply charming and I think I am just as excited about her pictures with and autographs of the Prime Minister and other dignitaries as she must surely be. And thank you for the Canada/Israel pins that you so generously gave to all of us.

“Mark, I still do not know how you organize events such as ITW and the bus trip in a matter of weeks when it takes me three days just to figure out if I save more money by going to No Frills instead of Fortinos or the other way around. It was a privilege to be part of this trip and I thank you for the invitation to come along.  You all have my sincerest admiration. Thank you.  Steve”

Message from Mark Vandermaas

I was stunned and humbled when the sponsor of our trip – the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem – called to ask if I would light one of the ceremonial candles as one of the representatives of the Zachor Coalition – the collection of organizations which helped support the memorial.

During the earlier days of my involvement in the Caledonia Crisis in 2007 I had the very great honour of meeting Sarah Sibylle Niemoller von Sell, widow of the Christian Pastor Martin Niemoller who was imprisoned for 8 years for defying Hitler. He is best known for his poem, ‘There was no one left to speak for me,‘ which he wrote to express his dismay at the failure of the intelligentsia to speak out against Nazism.

As the son of non-Jewish parents who lived under Nazi occupation and as someone who has done my imperfect best to honour the spirit of Pastor Niemoller’s words about speaking out against injustice, I don’t think anyone could bestow a greater honour than to ask me to light a candle in memory of the 6,000,000 so as to give meaning to the phrase – Never Again!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem for making this wonderful experience possible for me, and for so many other people. You honoured us with your invitation, and by providing transportation to the event. Thank you to Dave Gordon, my contact at the Society, who did such a great job in coordinating our participation and answering all my questions. The Society should be very proud of your work.

Thank you to Merlyn Kinrade for buying the Israel-Canada friendship pins for us all, and thank you to Olivia Kinrade for making the trip extra-special with your attentive participation. Your father is very proud of you.

Thank you to Gary McHale (a professional wildlife photographer before becoming an activist in Caledonia) for taking the magazine-quality photos during the ceremony.

Thank you to all who made the journey to honour the 6,000,000 Jewish dead as well as the living and their descendents, especially those who came despite serious health issues; you helped make this trip an experience none of us will ever forget.

Thank you also to those who wanted so much to participate, but were unable to do so. After returning home I received this message from Dave Brown of Yad Vashem:

“SUBJECT: With gratitude: Hi Mark, I’m really thrilled again that you could help with the Ottawa trip and please pass along our thanks again to everyone who took the long journey from London/Hamilton.”

Would you like to come next year?

If you would like to be notified if a similar trip becomes available next year, please send an email to Mark Vandermaas, mark@israeltruthweek.org, and ask to be placed on the Israel Truth Week mailing list.

Israel Truth Week Conference donors raised $1,700 for Royal View Church roof repairs

120321 Israel Truth Week Conference, London, ON, Canada: Debbie & Bonnie handle donations at the ITW table.UPDATE: An additional donation was received from a passenger on our Yad Vashem-sponsored bus trip to the 2012 National Holocaust Remembrance ceremony in Ottawa bringing  the total raised for Royal View Church’s roof fund to $1,700.05. Thank you!
———————–

The charitable goal for the first Israel Truth Week Conference was to raise $10,000 for repairs to the leaking roof of our host venue Royal View Church, a great friend of Israel. I have just received donation totals from them and I am pleased to report that Israel Truth Week attendees and supporters raised a total of $1,600.05 towards this worthy goal after expenses.

All told, approximately $2,000 was raised. I am very pleased with the result given that there were approximately 65 people in attendance. I have no doubt that next year we will be able to do even better for our venue’s chosen charity.

Mark Vandermaas re London Free Press: ‘Islam 101 – Islam & Christianity aren’t so different’

RE: Islam 101, April 10/12: Jesus as miracle worker part of Qu’ran [LINK]:

But it’s the similarities that show the world’s two largest religions, Islam and Christianity, aren’t so different.”

“In a sign of just how much Islam respects Jesus, our instructor always repeats the words, “peace be upon him” after mentioning Jesus’ name”

“Mohammed was the last messenger from God.”

Dear Mr. Carruthers:

I am sure that you did not intend to insult Christians and mislead your readers, but from the persective of this Christian who has trained with former Sharia court judge Sam Solomon (a pseudonym due to death threats) with respect to Islam/Sharia, I must point out that Christianity and Islam are polar opposites from each other. It is insulting and irresponsible to suggest that they have anything meaningful in common, and the simplest proof of this can be found by examining the people who inspired them:

ISLAM: began by a man who incited hate and violence against Christians and Jews, committed mass murder, owned & raped slaves, married a 6 year old girl and raped her when she was 9, and urged his followers to subjugate and take the lives of others so they would be rewarded in the afterlife.

CHRISTIANITY: began by a man who killed no one, raped no one, owned no one, told his followers to love their enemies, and willingly sacrificed his own life to cleanse us of our sins so we could have everlasting life.

If you would like to see a more detailed comparison of Mohammed & Islam vs. Jesus & Christianity, I would suggest this reference:

2012 Conference VIDEO: Gary McHale – afternoon keynote

120321 Israel Truth Week Conference, London, ON, Canada: Gary McHale, afternoon keynote speaker Our videography sponsor Just Right Media has just released the first video from the 2012 Israel Truth Week Conference. Gary McHale’s keynote speech for the afternoon session was a crowd favourite, and it is now available on video:

  • Israel Truth Week Conference, March 21/12: Gary McHale speech: “Dr. King’s ‘Letter From Birmingham Jail’: A Blueprint for Victory Over Anti-Israelism and Anti-Semitism
    [VIDEO, 39.42; NOTES, 13p]
  • Israel Truth Week Conference, March 21/12: Conference feature page

This video of Gary’s speech inside a church is attracting praise from as far away as Manitoba from those who have watched it, and listened to his Biblical defence of Israel, the Biblical case against anti-Semitism, and his inspiring call to action — for Christians especially —  that we must be prepared to pay a price for justice and equality and the other values we profess to believe in. Spoken, of course, by a man who has more than earned the right to speak on the subject.

120321 Gary McHale, afternoon keynote, Israel Truth Week Conference, London, ON, CanadaAs someone who has worked side-by-side with Gary for 5 years, I can assure you that this is the real Gary McHale, as most people have never seen him, sharing the strength and motivation that comes from his Christian faith:

From one Caledonia supporter to Gary:

“That is the best delivery that I have heard you make. Clear, concise, to the point! You used wonderful phrases emphasizing the certainty of persecution if you confront injustice with the ugly truth.”
